Manchester United is planning to make big changes this summer under new manager Ruben Amorim, who wants to improve the team’s performance next season. They’ve already signed their first new player, Matheus Cunha, and are working on bringing in more fresh faces.

Onana’s Struggles as a goalkeeper

One big problem last season was the goalkeeper position. Andre Onana, who joined from Inter Milan in 2023, didn’t do very well. He had a tough time settling in at Old Trafford and was heavily criticised for his poor performances. Because United is now making many changes, there’s a chance Onana could leave the team.

According to Sky Sports, French club AS Monaco is interested in signing Onana, and the player himself hasn’t ruled out the idea of leaving Manchester United this summer.

Manchester United Interested in Young Italian Keeper

While Onana’s future remains unclear, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that Manchester United has already spoken with Atalanta about signing Marco Carnesecchi, a 24-year-old goalkeeper who is seen as one of the best young talents in Italy.

Ruben Amorim sees great promise in Carnesecchi and believes he could do much better than Onana. Carnesecchi helped Atalanta finish third in Italy’s top league (Serie A) last season, and people at Manchester United think he would be a major improvement.

Who is Marco Carnesecchi?

Carnesecchi is from Rimini in Northern Italy. He started his football journey at Cesena and then joined Atalanta’s youth team in 2017. After a few loan spells at smaller clubs like Trapani and Cremonese, he returned to Atalanta and has been one of their best players over the past two seasons.

In 2024, he extended his contract with Atalanta until 2028, so the club can ask for a big transfer fee—reportedly €50 million (about £42.7 million).

Atalanta’s former coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who is now managing Roma, praised Carnesecchi and said, “He makes big saves and is always ready. He’s very important for the team and will get even better with his footwork.”

Last season, Carnesecchi had 13 clean sheets in 34 games and a 75.2% save accuracy, which is quite impressive. Because of his potential and skills, Manchester United is very eager to sign him.

In short: United may be ready to move on from Onana and bring in a talented young goalkeeper to lead their defense in the new season.
