Lizzo got really open and honest during her chat with Jake Shane on the latest episode of Therapuss. She reflected on how she’s been “canceled” quite a few times—but quickly corrected herself, saying maybe it’s not exactly “canceled” since she’s still here doing her thing. Instead, she described it more like facing a lot of “backlash” over the years.
What stood out is how Lizzo has used those tough moments as opportunities to grow and learn. She said, “I use it as a growing and learning lesson,” showing that she’s taken the criticism and turned it into something positive for herself.
For those who don’t know, Lizzo went through a pretty big controversy when she was sued by three former dancers and a stylist who accused her of sexual harassment and creating a difficult work environment. Lizzo has denied all the allegations. In fact, when she appeared on Keke Palmer’s podcast Baby, This is Keke last year, she was very clear that she felt she “did nothing wrong.”
During the Therapuss interview, Lizzo also took a walk down memory lane, recalling a major backlash from 2019. That year, her hit song Good As Hell was used in a Weight Watchers ad after Oprah Winfrey bought the company. At first, Lizzo was thrilled—she said, “It was like, ‘Oprah wants to use your song!’ I lost my mind. I was like, ‘Oh my god, Oprah knows who I am!’” She proudly shared the ad, but some people accused her of promoting eating disorders because of the Weight Watchers connection. Lizzo admitted that the criticism hurt her deeply, saying, “It broke my heart. It truly broke my heart.”
Later in the interview, Lizzo opened up about her new album, Love in Real Life. She described it as a kind of diary chronicling her life between October 2023 and November 2024. She explained that every album she’s ever made has been closely tied to what she was going through personally. But this time, she’s written a song that doesn’t have a “happy ending,” showing a more vulnerable and honest side of her story.
