Lizzo recently opened up about her time away from the public eye following a lawsuit filed against her by three former backup dancers in 2023. The Truth Hurts singer clarified that her disappearance from the spotlight was not a reaction to the legal issues but a planned break that aligned with the completion of her album cycle.
In an interview on the On Purpose podcast with Jay Shetty, Lizzo explained that her absence was a part of her broader strategy to focus on her personal well-being after finishing her album work. “I had planned on being off-cycle. That means you’re not in the media; you’re not doing interviews. Your album cycle is done,” she shared. For Lizzo, this time away wasn’t about avoiding scrutiny, but about giving herself a well-deserved pause.
The 36-year-old artist made it clear that her break coincided with the completion of her music project. “The best, simplest answer as to why I am back now is ’cause my album’s done. This is my job, you know. I am a musical artist,'” she said.
Lizzo’s break from the public eye came at a turbulent time, just as serious accusations of sexual harassment and workplace misconduct began to surface. However, Lizzo pointed out that her decision to retreat and focus on her wellness was made long before the legal drama unfolded. At the time, she was in Japan, spending time in nature and meditating. “This was planned… I’m in Japan, I’m in the woods, I’m meditating, and oh, this scandal just happened. Where’s Lizzo?” she reflected.
Acknowledging the difficulty of the situation, Lizzo admitted that it was a “dark” time, where she felt unfairly vilified by the public. She mentioned that, despite her anxiety, this situation felt different from others, as she experienced a widespread sense of being disliked due to the unfounded accusations.
Months later, Lizzo shared that she found strength through the support of her fans and used her emotional turmoil as fuel for her music. Her upcoming album is said to reflect this personal growth, capturing the feelings and experiences she went through during this challenging period.
