Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly decided to leave the club at the end of the season and join Spanish giants Real Madrid. Former England and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson claims that the 26-year-old signed a pre-contract agreement with Madrid back in January, though no official announcement has been made yet.
Why is Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving Liverpool?
Alexander-Arnold has been a key player for Liverpool for years, playing a vital role in their success. However, his contract is set to expire in June, and negotiations over a new deal have stalled. This uncertainty has fueled speculation about his future, with Real Madrid emerging as strong contenders to secure his signature.
Paul Robinson, who was recently in Spain, shared that sources in Madrid are confident the deal is already done.
“I spent time in Madrid when we covered the Real Madrid vs. Man City game, and speaking to sources, they’re convinced Trent signed a pre-contract in January,” Robinson told Football Insider. “It hasn’t been made public yet, but the word in Madrid is they are 100% sure that he has signed a deal.”
Liverpool could be facing a major shake-up this summer, as other key players like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also facing uncertain futures. However, Robinson believes Alexander-Arnold’s departure is the most certain of the three.
“Out of the three of them, that one looks like it’s a done deal,” he added. “I don’t think how Liverpool perform between now and the end of the season will have any bearing on the decisions the players make.”
Where will Trent Alexander-Arnold fit at Real Madrid?
Alexander-Arnold has built his reputation as one of the best attacking full-backs in the world, known for his pinpoint passing and ability to create scoring opportunities. This season alone, he has played 39 games, scored three goals, and provided seven assists.
At Real Madrid, he is expected to compete with Dani Carvajal for the right-back position. Carvajal, 33, has been out with a knee injury since October but is set to return soon. Although Carvajal recently signed a contract extension until 2026, Real Madrid sees Alexander-Arnold as his long-term successor.
If the reports are accurate, Liverpool is set to lose one of their most influential players this summer, marking the end of an era for the club.
