The live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch is finally heading to Disney+. If you loved the film in cinemas, you won’t have to wait much longer to watch it at home. The official release date on the streaming platform is Wednesday, 3rd September 2025.
This comes after the movie first hit theatres on 23rd May. So it had a good, long run on the big screen before coming online.
The movie has done incredibly well. It has already made over one billion dollars worldwide. Right now, it is the highest-grossing American movie of the year across the world. If we include all films from everywhere, it’s only behind China’s big hit, Ne Zha 2.
With such a huge response, Disney has already started working on a sequel. Reports say Chris Sanders, who wrote the original animated version in 2002 and also voiced Stitch, is writing the next one too. He is back for the sequel, and that’s exciting news for fans of the original.
Many people who watched the new version said it stayed true to the original story. But there were a few small changes. For example, the character Gantu, who was a major villain in the original, didn’t appear in the remake.
Also, Stitch was made a little less wild in this new version. The director, Dean Fleischer Camp, talked about why they did this. He said some things that look funny in cartoons don’t really work in real-life movies.
In animation, a crazy car crash or a big destruction scene can be funny and light-hearted. But in a live-action movie, using real cars and real people, those same scenes can feel dangerous or upsetting.
So the team had to work hard to keep the fun and chaos of Stitch, without making it feel too serious or scary in live-action. They wanted to hold on to Stitch’s wild charm, but still make it safe and enjoyable for everyone watching.
Now that the streaming date is announced, fans can mark their calendars. And with a sequel already in the works, it looks like the adventure of Lilo and Stitch is far from over.
