Fans of Legally Blonde finally have a date to circle in pink pen. Prime Video has confirmed that its highly anticipated prequel series Elle will premiere this summer, and in a surprise move, the streamer has also revealed that the show has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its debut.

The early renewal is a major vote of confidence in the series and will come as welcome news to audiences eager to see how Elle Woods’s origin story unfolds on screen. The show will explore Elle’s teenage years, long before Harvard Law School, charting the formative experiences that shaped her into the confident, compassionate and underestimated legal powerhouse audiences first met in the 2001 comedy classic.

Rather than retreading familiar ground, Elle is positioned as a coming-of-age drama with heart, humour and ambition, showing how Elle navigated high school with her trademark optimism, intelligence and unapologetic femininity. The series aims to deepen the character while staying true to the tone that made Legally Blonde a cultural touchstone.

Reese Witherspoon, who originated the role and remains synonymous with the character, is closely involved in the project through her production company Hello Sunshine and serves as executive producer. Announcing the season 2 renewal, Witherspoon reflected on the franchise’s legacy and the journey ahead.

“Twenty-five years after the world met Elle Woods for the first time, it’s a dream come true to share the story of how she became the unstoppable force we all fell in love with,” she said.

She also praised the casting of Lexi Minetree, who steps into the iconic role for the series. “Discovering Lexi Minetree and watching her step into Elle’s fabulous shoes has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career,” Witherspoon added. “I think our series’ themes of kindness, authenticity, and believing in yourself will resonate deeply with fans of the original films and new audiences alike.”

Witherspoon went on to describe the creative process as a joy, confirming that work on season 2 will begin shortly after the first season launches. “I can’t wait to share Season One with the world and start rolling cameras on season 2,” she said.

Amazon MGM Studios echoed that enthusiasm. Peter Friedlander, Global Head of Television at the studio, said the early renewal reflects strong belief in the show’s creative direction. “Elle captures the heart, confidence, and optimism that made Elle Woods an enduring cultural icon, while giving audiences a fresh and deeply personal coming-of-age story,” he said. “Ordering a second season speaks to our belief in the creative vision and the incredible team behind the series.”

The show is created and run by Laura Kittrell (Insecure), with Lexi Minetree leading the cast as teenage Elle Woods. She is joined by June Diane Raphael as Elle’s mother Eva and Tom Everett Scott as her father Wyatt. The ensemble cast also includes Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney and Zac Looker, with recurring appearances from Jessica Belkin, Logan Shroyer, Amy Pietz, Matt Ober, Chloe Wepper, David Burtka, Brad Harder, Kayla Maisonet, Lisa Yamada and James Van Der Beek.

When the series was first announced in 2024, Witherspoon described the project as a long-held dream, promising fans a deeper look at Elle’s early life through a modern lens while staying true to the character’s essence.
