Lee Jun Young is making his debut in Japanese cinema with the film Tokyo Taxi, directed by the legendary Yoji Yamada. The news was confirmed by his agency, Billions, on July 8, and reported by Dispatch. This marks an important milestone in Lee Jun Young’s career as he expands beyond the Korean entertainment industry into international projects. The actor, known for his roles in popular dramas, is set to showcase a new side of his acting through this collaboration.
Tokyo Taxi is Yamada’s 91st film and is based on the French film Taxi. Unlike the original, this adaptation focuses on deeper emotional themes such as regret, reconciliation, and meaningful final encounters. The movie stars some of Japan’s most acclaimed actors, including Takuya Kimura, Chieko Baisho, Yû Aoi, and Takaya Sakoda, with Lee Jun Young joining them in a significant role.
In the film, Lee portrays Kim Young Ki, the first love of the character Sumire, played by Chieko Baisho. His role represents a key moment in Sumire’s life, and he is also involved in emotionally impactful scenes with Yû Aoi’s character. His casting was kept secret during production, and the news only came out after he completed filming.
Reflecting on the experience, Lee shared that Director Yamada’s emotionally driven direction helped him immerse naturally into his role. Though the filming period was short, he described it as intense and meaningful. He expressed gratitude for being part of the project and said he hopes the film will convey a sense of warmth and humanity to viewers.
