The Los Angeles Lakers are once again at the center of trade deadline chatter. With February 5 approaching fast, fans are left wondering if the team will make a bold move or regret not pushing harder. Right now, it could go either way.

Hypothetical Luka Dončić trade shocks NBA fans

Most signs point toward the Lakers making only a minor move. Still, Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey floated a massive hypothetical trade that grabbed attention across the league. In his proposal, the Lakers would send Luka Dončić and Jaxson Hayes to the Philadelphia 76ers. In return, Los Angeles would receive Tyrese Maxey, rookie VJ Edgecombe, and a 2032 first-round pick.

Bailey argued the value makes sense on paper. Maxey is eight years younger than Anthony Davis, and Edgecombe is seen as a high-upside prospect. The future draft pick could land at a time when Joel Embiid may be retired, and Luka would be in his mid-30s. That timeline alone makes the pick intriguing.

Bailey also noted that Daryl Morey has never been shy about swinging big. A Luka and Embiid pairing would be devastating offensively if Embiid stays healthy. From Philadelphia’s perspective, it’s tempting.

Why the Lakers would never do it

As exciting as Maxey and Edgecombe are, this trade makes no sense for the Lakers. Maxey’s speed and downhill attack are elite. Edgecombe already shows maturity and shot-making as a rookie. Together, they could be a nightmare for defenses for years.

But Luka Dončić is different. He is the franchise. The Lakers traded Anthony Davis to get him for a reason. You do not move a 6-foot-8 point guard who can control games, carry an offense, and define an era unless something has gone terribly wrong.

If the Lakers build the right roster around Luka, championships are not a dream. They are realistic. Multiple titles are on the table if management gets it right.

Unless Luka’s relationship with the organization completely collapses, this kind of trade is pure fantasy. The Lakers may explore the market, but Luka Dončić is not going anywhere.
