Kremlin warns Europe over talk of downing Russian planes

The Kremlin has strongly criticized recent European remarks suggesting NATO could shoot down Russian military aircraft if they enter allied airspace. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that such talk is “reckless, irresponsible, and dangerous in its consequences.” He made the comments during an interview with Russian state television reporter Pavel Zarubin.

His warning came after Bloomberg reported that European diplomats had delivered a clear message to Moscow. According to the report, NATO allies are prepared to respond firmly to any violations of their airspace by Russian planes, even if that means engaging them militarily.

The exchange highlights the growing tension between Russia and the West at a time when relations are already at a low point. Peskov’s remarks signal Moscow’s concern that rhetoric about direct military action could escalate risks and lead to unintended confrontation.

For now, the statements reflect a war of words rather than action. But with both sides hardening their stances, the atmosphere in Europe’s security environment remains fraught with uncertainty.
