The New York Knicks might be about to make another big decision soon.
They already made one major move recently; they fired their head coach, Tom Thibodeau, even though he had a pretty successful five years with the team.
Now, the team’s management has to decide what to do next: Should they change up the team’s players or keep the main group the same? This is an important choice because the Knicks were very close to winning their first NBA championship since 1973; they were just six wins away.
Right now, the only player on the team who seems completely safe from being traded is Jalen Brunson. He’s playing at a very high level, and the Knicks want to keep him no matter what.
But Karl-Anthony Towns (KAT), another star player, keeps coming up in tons of trade rumours. People are wondering if the Knicks will use him in a deal to get someone even better.
On a podcast called Wright Way, sports expert Nick Wright shared his idea: He said that if the Knicks offered KAT to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Kevin Durant (KD), the Suns might actually say yes.
Why? For two main reasons:
-
KAT has a very expensive contract, over the next three years, he’ll be paid $53 million, then $57 million, and finally $61 million. That’s a huge amount, and it could be hard for the Knicks to manage.
-
Durant is 37 years old, so he wouldn’t be a long-term solution, but he’s still an amazing player. Adding him to the team, especially with Jalen Brunson, could make the Knicks super dangerous next season.
Also, if their other center, Mitchell Robinson, can stay healthy and play enough minutes, then KD would give them a big edge on offense. And since the Boston Celtics are looking like they might not be as strong next year, it could be the perfect time for the Knicks to go all-in for a championship.
Even though Durant is older, he’s still better than Towns. So this move might make the Knicks one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference next season.
The only hard part? Convincing the Suns to actually agree to the trade. Other teams might offer Phoenix more than what the Knicks can.
The only way this really works is if Kevin Durant himself says he wants to be traded to the Knicks. If he does that, then the Suns might consider it. But right now, there’s no sign that KD wants that move.
