Knicks could take a smart gamble on Damian Lillard for future success

The New York Knicks are in a great spot right now, they’re good enough to seriously compete for an NBA championship. After coming up short in the Eastern Conference Finals, they’ve made some big improvements this offseason.

The team made a coaching change, swapping out Tom Thibodeau for Mike Brown. Not everyone agrees on whether that was the right move, but the Knicks have also made some strong signings, adding Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele, which most fans and experts agree will make the team better.

With how unpredictable the Eastern Conference might be next season, the Knicks have a real shot at making the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. And even if they don’t win it all right away, they’ve built a team that could stay in the title race for at least the next couple of years.

That’s why some people think the Knicks should make one more bold move to finish off their offseason. According to Jeremy Brener from Knicks on SI, one possible option is to bring in veteran guard Damian Lillard.

Lillard is recovering from injury and likely won’t play next season. After the Milwaukee Bucks released him and cleared his huge contract, he could be available to sign with another team for a much lower price, maybe even a minimum deal. That would allow a team like the Knicks to sign him without giving up much and help him get settled in while he recovers.

Even though Lillard wouldn’t make an impact right away, the idea of him joining forces with Jalen Brunson in the backcourt in 2027 is exciting. That could be a nightmare for opposing defenses. There’s no way to know for sure if Lillard will return to his old All-Star form, but with very little risk involved, it might be a smart move for the Knicks to take a chance.
