Kirsten Dunst, an Oscar-nominated actress, will be starring opposite Sydney Sweeney in Lionsgate’s anticipated sequel to the psychological thriller, The Housemaid, which was released in 2025. The announcement of Dunst’s casting was made by Lionsgate on March 23, 2026, and is one of the last major casting announcements for the sequel based on Frank McFadden’s bestselling novel series. Dunst, who is 43 years old, will portray a character in a world where nothing is as it seems and will have the opportunity to use both her extensive and her strong range as an actress. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Erin Westerman called Dunst “an icon of cinema” and said that bringing The Housemaid’s next chapter to life with her is “a true privilege.” Westerman added that Dunst has an extraordinary range, is very bold, and that when she and Sweeney perform in the same scene, their chemistry will be an irresistible force.
As Sweeney returns to lead the sequel and produce it too, she will once more portray Millie, the housemaid, who has found herself surrounded by dark, mysterious secrets surrounding the households she works in. Director Paul Feig will also return, as will Rebecca Sonnenshine, to write the script, and Michele Morrone will reprise his role as well. Along with Todd Lieberman and others, Freida McFadden will serve as a producer. Filming of the project is set to begin in late 2026, but no release date has been determined as of yet.
In 2025, The Housemaid came out on Christmas Day and became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, earning close to $400 million at the worldwide box office. There has been some suggestion from Seyfried that she will make a cameo appearance in the sequel.
In terms of star quality, Kirsten Dunst’s participation brings an entirely new set of chances for the second movie, including more surprises in this “twisted” domestic adventure story than before!
Fans of this franchise can look forward to even more heightened suspense as Millie discovers the secrets locked behind the doors of the new home where she works.
