King Charles expressed his heartfelt condolences following the passing of Dame Maggie Smith, who died at the age of 89. In a touching statement shared with Queen Camilla, the King noted how deeply saddened they were by the loss of the celebrated actress, describing her death as the closure of a chapter for a “national treasure.”
“As the curtain comes down on a national treasure, we join all those around the world in remembering with the fondest admiration and affection her many great performances, and her warmth and wit that shone through both off and on the stage,” King Charles wrote. He reflected on his memorable meeting with Smith at the Pride of Britain Awards in 2016, sharing a photo from that event as a tribute.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also paid his respects, referring to Smith as a “true national treasure.” Tributes from Hollywood stars and fans flooded social media, celebrating her vast contributions to the performing arts and the charm she exuded both on and off the stage.
Smith passed away peacefully, surrounded by her two sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, who confirmed the news of her death. Throughout her illustrious career, Smith garnered numerous accolades for her performances in iconic films and series, including Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, Othello, Sister Act, and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
Her portrayal of Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series introduced her to new generations of fans, further solidifying her legacy. Smith won two Academy Awards—one for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1970 and another for California Suite in 1979. In addition to her Oscars, she earned five BAFTAs, four Emmy Awards, and various other prestigious honors. In recognition of her remarkable contributions to the entertainment industry, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990.
