The controversy surrounding Nick Carter, a member of the Backstreet Boys, began in 2017 when Melissa Schuman, a former member of the girl group Dream, accused him of raping her in 2003. Schuman detailed the alleged incident in a blog post, claiming that Carter assaulted her in his Santa Monica apartment when she was an 18-year-old virgin. She described the encounter as non-consensual, while Carter has consistently denied the allegations, stating that the sexual interaction was consensual.

The situation gained additional attention when Kaya Jones, a former member of the Pussycat Dolls and an ex-girlfriend of Carter, publicly supported Schuman. In the Investigation Discovery docuseries “Fallen Idols: Nick and Aaron Carter,” Jones shared that she reached out to Schuman after learning about her allegations against Carter. Jones was motivated to contact Schuman because she was disturbed by how Schuman’s allegations were being discredited. Jones and Schuman connected via Twitter, leading to a conversation in which Schuman found solace and support from Jones.

In response to Schuman’s allegations and subsequent accusations from other women, Nick Carter filed a countersuit in February 2023 against Shannon Ruth, who had accused him of sexual battery. Schuman was included in this countersuit, with Carter alleging that the women were exploiting the #MeToo movement to defame him for monetary gain.
