Kate Winslet is gearing up for her upcoming film Lee, a gripping war drama about war photographer Elizabeth “Lee” Miller. In a recent interview with Times Radio, Winslet reflected on her iconic roles as Rose in Titanic and Tilly in The Dressmaker, and discussed how these characters differ from her real self.

Winslet acknowledged that while her characters have left a significant mark on audiences and pop culture, she feels she’s quite different from the personas she portrays on screen. She described her past roles as “headstrong” and “gutsy,” noting, “I don’t think I’ve ever played anyone who’s actually like me at all. It’s really bizarre.”

She shared that she typically looks for personal connections with her characters during her performances but admitted that she didn’t find many similarities between herself and her past roles, using her character Mare Sheehan as an example of someone she didn’t really connect with and felt she had to invent.

Looking ahead to Lee, Winslet feels she has found a common thread with the character of Lee Miller. “I’ve gone through this process that I do have that same kind of just-determined spirit,” she said. Winslet reflected on her younger self, noting, “I had a lot more defiance, I think, when I was younger; I think I had to stick up for myself a lot more back in those days.” Although she feels the film industry has evolved, she believes her passion and determination resonate with Miller’s spirit.

Lee tells the story of Elizabeth “Lee” Miller, a fashion model who became a renowned war correspondent for Vogue during World War II. In addition to Winslet, the film features Andy Samberg, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Andrea Riseborough, and James Murray. The film is set to premiere on September 20.
