Democratic vice president nominee Kamala Harris on Wednesday accused Donald Trump of “betraying our friends and embracing dictators” as she attacked his “unilateral approach” foreign policy. The statement was aimed at America pulling out of the landmark Iran nuclear deal, leaving the country with lesser allies.

During the vice presidential debate held in Salt Lake City, Utah, the California Senator stressed foreign policy “might sound complicated” but is based about relationships.

“You have got to keep your word to your friends. You have got to be loyal to your friends. People who have stood with you, you’ve got to stand with them”, Kamala Harris said.

“Donald Trump has betrayed our friends and has embraced dictators around the world,” she stated. Vice President Mike Pence defended by saying the Trump administration has “stood strong with our allies.

President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the Iran nuclear deal, in May 2018, in one of the biggest foreign policy decisions. The move was opposed by US allies including Germany, France, and Britain.

Mike Pence praised the Trump administration’s efforts on combating Islamic state. He said that Trump has “unleashed the American military” and took down Iraqi terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a man responsible for the thousands of deaths.

Harris also highlighted that Russia had  interfered in the 2016 US Presidential elections and Trump prefers to take advice from Russian President Vladimir Putin than the American intelligence organization.

Harris, who aspires to be the first woman vice-president in history, and Pence were separated by plexiglass barriers during the debate.
