In an upcoming four-part docu-series directed by Tara Wood, Johnny Depp opens up about his early career struggles, particularly with his heartthrob status, and the transformative creative relationship he developed with director Tim Burton. The series offers an intimate look at Depp’s career, including his time working on Edward Scissorhands and his collaborations with Burton, whom Depp credits with helping him navigate his insecurities and refine his craft.
In the second episode of the docu-series, Depp candidly discusses his discomfort with the fame that came early in his career, particularly his heartthrob status. He recalls how overwhelming and isolating the constant attention from the paparazzi and fans became, making him feel like a “raw nerve on display.” He expresses how self-conscious he was as people would point and whisper whenever he walked by, leaving him feeling vulnerable.
When reflecting on his first meeting with Burton, Depp recounts how they immediately connected over shared interests, such as old horror films and Boris Karloff, which laid the groundwork for a creative partnership. However, Depp, at the time, didn’t think he had a shot at landing the role of Edward Scissorhands. In fact, he mentions how he initially thought there was “no chance” of being cast, despite having a three-and-a-half-hour conversation with Burton.
Depp also reflects on the tension he felt while filming Edward Scissorhands. He recalls being cast but feeling out of place, as Burton intentionally isolated him from the rest of the cast and crew during rehearsals. Depp didn’t understand why Burton was excluding him, and he began to feel paranoid, thinking that maybe Burton didn’t trust him. Later, Depp realized that Burton’s method was a deliberate creative choice—by isolating him, Burton was allowing Depp to tap into Edward’s own sense of isolation, which ultimately made Depp’s portrayal of the character more authentic.
The docu-series, which will explore Burton’s life and work, gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at his lasting influence on Hollywood and the unique dynamics between him and his actors, particularly Depp. This personal glimpse into their professional relationship reveals how Burton’s unorthodox methods pushed Depp to become a better actor and how their collaboration continues to shape Depp’s career.
