In her latest venture, Joey King delves into the emotional terrain of the Holocaust series “We Were the Lucky Ones,” but she reveals that method acting isn’t her chosen approach, especially for such intense projects.
Starring alongside Logan Lerman in this adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s poignant novel, King portrays Halina, the younger sister of Lerman’s character Addy, as they navigate their family’s survival during the Holocaust. The cast also includes Sam Woolf, Robin Weigart, and a host of other talented actors.
Reflecting on her experience, King admits on the “Just for Variety” podcast that she admires method actors for their dedication but finds solace in moments of release between takes. “Having those moments of release in between setups and in between takes with your friends [is needed],” she shares. “Sometimes you need that release at the snack table with each other…because it got really dark.”
Acknowledging the heavy emotional toll of filming such a series, King appreciates Hulu’s provision of trauma therapists on set. She emphasizes the importance of the cast leaning on each other for support, recounting movie nights with co-stars as a respite from the intensity of the shoot.
King, now 24, opens up about facing antisemitism, revealing that her encounters began at the age of 12 on social media. “Now I just expect it because antisemitism is not the only thing I experience in terms of bullying online,” she shares, highlighting the prevalence of online harassment.
Despite the challenges, King’s career continues to soar across various genres, from action-fantasy to rom-coms. She expresses excitement about her upcoming role in the Richard LaGravenese-directed rom-com “A Family Affair” alongside Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron, her childhood crush.
King also reminisces about her experience working with Taylor Swift on music videos, praising Swift’s confidence as a director. Reflecting on her journey from a “High School Musical” fan to a successful actress, King’s resilience shines through in both her career and personal life.
As she navigates Hollywood’s diverse landscape, Joey King remains a beacon of talent and strength, ready to take on any role that comes her way.
