Joe Rogan, a controversial podcaster, has consistently drawn a significant, predominantly male audience to Spotify. Despite its exclusive availability on the platform due to a deal struck in 2020, “The Joe Rogan Experience” maintains its position as the most popular show on Spotify for 2023. This ranking is determined by the number of unique users who listen to at least two minutes of an episode. The deal, valued at over $200 million spanning three and a half years, suggests its potential expiration around early or mid-2024.

However, retaining exclusive rights to Rogan’s show comes with a hefty price tag, and Spotify faces pressure to rationalize content spending while proving the profitability of podcast investments. CEO Daniel Ek has emphasized the need for cautious investment in future podcast deals, though he hasn’t specifically addressed the Rogan agreement. Spotify declined to comment on ongoing negotiations with Rogan.

Despite Rogan’s strong performance, concerns persist regarding the value he brings versus the controversies he generates. His podcast frequently features provocative guests, and both Rogan and Spotify have faced backlash over certain content, including boycotts from music artists due to anti-vaccination episodes in early 2022. There’s speculation that Rogan might opt to depart from Spotify, potentially taking his substantial fanbase elsewhere, possibly to his own paywalled platform for a limited exclusive period. Nevertheless, Rogan’s show attracts a demographic highly sought after by specific advertisers, with a recent YouGov U.K. survey indicating that 81% of listeners were men and 56% fell within the 18-34 age bracket.

Despite Rogan’s significance, the success of Spotify’s podcast strategy isn’t solely reliant on “The Joe Rogan Experience” being exclusive. The platform boasts other popular original podcasts, such as “Call Her Daddy,” ranked second on Spotify, which claims the title of most-listened-to podcast among women. Among the top 25 in the U.S., Spotify hosts nine originals, including shows like “Armchair Expert” with Dax Shepard, “Anything Goes With Emma Chamberlain,” and “Science Vs.”

Spotify’s podcast strategy involves a diverse lineup, with several original podcasts listed among the most anticipated shows from U.S. creators in the current year. Despite initial missteps, Spotify has honed its understanding of successful podcast content, trimming underperforming shows and reorganizing staff. The company remains optimistic about the potential profitability of podcasts, aiming for gross margins of 40%-50% within the next five years, exceeding its targets for music gross margins.

The podcast landscape on Spotify continues to grow, with over 100 million podcast listeners and more than half a billion individuals having tuned in since Spotify entered the podcasting arena in 2019. The platform now offers over 5 million podcast shows across 170 markets. Notably, comedy tops the list for men’s favorite podcast category globally on Spotify (inclusive of “The Joe Rogan Experience”), while health and fitness take the lead among women. The fastest-growing podcast categories in 2023 globally include society and culture, education, religion and spirituality, health and fitness, and business and technology.
