Over a decade after The Social Network first hit theaters, a sequel is officially underway. Titled The Social Network Part II, the follow-up is being written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, who also penned the Oscar-winning 2010 original. Unlike the first film, which chronicled the founding of Facebook, this new installment will explore the platform’s more controversial years.
Story Based on The Facebook Files
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will draw inspiration from The Facebook Files, a Wall Street Journal investigation. The story will tackle major topics, including misinformation on Meta platforms, the impact of social media on teenagers, and the company’s involvement in events leading up to the January 6 Capitol riot.
Jesse Eisenberg Passes, Jeremy Strong in Talks
Jesse Eisenberg, who famously portrayed Mark Zuckerberg in the original, is not returning for the sequel. Sources suggest Eisenberg declined due to the challenge of playing a younger Zuckerberg from over a decade ago, though some speculate it could also be a negotiation tactic.
Stepping into the role may be Succession star Jeremy Strong, though nothing is official yet. At 46, Strong is slightly older than Eisenberg but brings significant experience from high-profile roles in shows like Succession and films such as The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Early Casting Rumors
Deadline reports that Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) is in early talks to play Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter who investigated Meta. Mikey Madison, known for Anora and Better Things, is reportedly being considered for the role of Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen. As of now, no casting decisions have been officially confirmed.
Focus on Meta’s Controversial Years
Set around 2021, the period when The Facebook Files were published, the film aims to explore the inner workings of Meta. The project will highlight the company’s alleged disregard for internal warnings about its platforms’ effects on mental health and democracy.
While The Social Network Part II is still in early development, fans can expect another sharp, dialogue-driven look at one of the most influential tech companies of the 21st century. No release date has been announced yet.
