Jeremy Renner, the actor famous for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel movies, might not be part of the upcoming Marvel films because of some ongoing contract problems.
At first, people thought this was just the usual Hollywood back-and-forth — you know, like actors and studios negotiating until they find a middle ground. But now, it looks like things might be more serious than just a simple disagreement. Rumors are saying that if Renner doesn’t agree to the studio’s demands, his character Hawkeye could be left out of future Avengers movies altogether.
There were also plans for Renner to come back as Hawkeye in the second season of the Disney+ show based on his character. But production has been put on hold until they figure out this contract mess.
Here’s the deal with the contract: Marvel asked Renner to appear in season 2 of the Hawkeye show, which was a big hit during the MCU’s Phase 4. But Renner turned down the offer because Marvel only wanted to pay him about half of what he made for the first season.
Renner even joked about the low offer, saying he wondered if Marvel thought he was “half the Jeremy” after his snowplow accident. (For context, he had a serious accident that affected him physically.) He told Marvel to “go fly a kite,” which basically means he wasn’t happy with the offer and wasn’t going to accept it until they came back with a better deal.
Renner said he was okay with getting paid the same as he did for the first season, but Marvel offered him less for season 2. Some reports suggest that the real reason is that Marvel actually doesn’t want to make a second season of Hawkeye at all.
Apparently, the studio was feeling pressure to say yes to a second season, so they made an offer to Renner they knew he would refuse. This way, if the show got canceled, Marvel could blame Renner instead of taking the blame themselves, avoiding bad publicity.
All of this news is coming out while rumors swirl that Renner might still show up in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, which is supposed to have a huge cast of Marvel superheroes.
