Jeremy Allen White, known for his acclaimed role in The Bear, is stepping into the legendary shoes of Bruce Springsteen in Deliver Me from Nowhere, a biographical film chronicling the making of Springsteen’s 1982 album, Nebraska. The film, now in production in New Jersey, promises an intimate look at the personal and artistic journey behind one of Springsteen’s most influential albums.
Bruce Springsteen’s biopic:Deliver Me from Nowhere
Directed by Scott Cooper and produced by 20th Century Studios, Deliver Me from Nowhere boasts an impressive cast alongside White. Succession star Jeremy Strong will portray Springsteen’s longtime manager and mentor, Jon Landau, while Paul Walter Hauser joins as guitar technician Mike Batlan. Odessa Young, Stephen Graham, and Johnny Cannizzaro round out the cast as Springsteen’s love interest Faye, his father, and E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt, respectively.
The film explores the transformative period that followed Springsteen’s The River tour in 1981. Described as a “pivotal time in his life” by the studio, the making of Nebraska saw the artist retreat into his New Jersey home, recording on a simple four-track recorder without the backing of his famed E Street Band. The result was an introspective, haunting acoustic album that delved into themes of hardship, alienation, and hope, ultimately inspiring a generation of musicians and becoming one of Springsteen’s most revered works.
Cooper, who adapted Deliver Me from Nowhere from Warren Zanes’ 2023 novel of the same name, shared his passion for capturing the raw intensity of Nebraska. Cooper said in a statement that the beginning of the production on this film is an incredibly humbling and thrilling journey. “Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska has profoundly shaped my artistic vision. The album’s raw, unvarnished portrayal of life’s trials and resilience resonates deeply with me.” Cooper emphasized his commitment to honoring Springsteen’s legacy, describing the project as “a transformative cinematic experience.”
Springsteen himself has given his blessing to the project, sharing his enthusiasm during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show earlier this month. Praising the film’s “lovely cast,” Springsteen commended White, stating, “It’s difficult, but he is a great actor and sings pretty good.” White, who recently expressed excitement for the role, noted in the 2024 Emmys press room that he is supported by a “really beautiful team of people” and has even received guidance directly from Springsteen.
