The sequel to Superman is officially on the way. James Gunn, who is directing and co-heading DC Studios, revealed the title and release date of the film, which has fans eagerly waiting.
The new movie will be called Superman: Man of Tomorrow and is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Gunn shared a sketch of Superman and Lex Luthor facing off on his X account alongside the announcement. While plot details are mostly under wraps, the director has said it won’t be a direct continuation of the first film.
David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are expected to return as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. Rachel Brosnahan may also join the cast, though her role hasn’t been confirmed yet. Corenswet and Hoult shared artwork related to the film on their social media after Gunn’s announcement.
The title Man of Tomorrow is one of Superman’s nicknames and was also used for the 2020 animated film Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Fans can still watch the first live-action Superman on Prime Video, where it’s available to rent or purchase.
The official synopsis of the first film reads: “Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide. James Gunn presents a newly imagined Superman with epic action, humor, and heart, delivering a hero driven by compassion and belief in the goodness of humankind.” The original Superman was released on July 11 and had a strong run at the box office.
