Superman, James Gunn’s much-anticipated reboot of the iconic DC superhero, is just days away from its theatrical release — and the director is opening up about what led him to cast David Corenswet in the title role.
In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Gunn revealed that Corenswet was chosen from a pool of around 30 actors who auditioned for Superman. What set him apart wasn’t just his appearance or vocal tone, but something more personal: his personality. Gunn described Corenswet as a “square” in real life, just like Superman — someone who genuinely listens to old jazz and swing music and exudes a wholesome energy that matches the character’s core values.
Gunn first noticed Corenswet’s talent in Ti West’s Pearl, where the actor left a strong impression. “I thought, That guy should audition for Superman,” Gunn said. “Luckily, I saw David reading on the first day, and he was amazing.” Alongside Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan also stood out in her audition for Lois Lane. Gunn noted that while the physical requirements for Superman are strict, casting Lois offered more flexibility — yet both lead actors emerged strong from the very start.
Discussing a key audition scene — one in which Superman argues with Lois about his role in the world — Gunn said Corenswet’s performance in that scene alone confirmed that he was the right choice. “He just nailed it,” the director said. “When you see him in that scene in the movie, you realize this guy’s just a fantastic actor, and he also happens to look and sound a lot like Superman.”
What the film is about
Superman will explore the dual burdens the superhero faces — as a protector of Earth and as a man trying to navigate a world that questions his every move. The film is set to introduce a new take on Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult), with the villain working to remove Superman from the equation entirely. But Superman won’t face the threat alone. Lois Lane and Superman’s loyal canine sidekick, Krypto, are expected to play key roles in helping him rise above the danger.
