Jake Gyllenhaal is no stranger to intense physical transformations, but even he admits that the thought of bulking up again for the Road House sequel is downright terrifying. After already going through a grueling training regimen for the 2024 remake, the actor confessed that the idea of starting from scratch once more is giving him chills.
During a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Gyllenhaal was asked how he felt about getting back into peak physical shape for the sequel. Without hesitation, he responded, “It’s terrifying. It’s terrifying.”—emphasizing just how daunting the process is.
Colbert, always quick with a joke, teased the actor by asking if he’d have to eat every remaining chicken in America to get enough protein. He even suggested shrimp as an alternative. But Gyllenhaal wasn’t having it, shuddering at the thought. “When you say it like that, it’s the most unappetizing,” he quipped.
Gyllenhaal is no stranger to pushing his body to the limit for a role. Back in 2015, he underwent a dramatic transformation for Southpaw, where he played a boxer. He’s previously credited his ability to reach peak physical form to an entire team of professionals helping him manage nutrition, prevent injuries, and maintain the right look for the role. Speaking to People, he acknowledged that the process was far from a solo effort:
“I knew that I needed help with nutrition, and I knew I needed to keep myself safe from injury. At the same time, I had to achieve the aesthetics the role demanded. Balancing all of that required a team supporting me every step of the way.”
In the Road House remake, Gyllenhaal took on the role of Dalton, a former UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer, originally played by Patrick Swayze in the iconic 1989 film. Now, with a sequel on the horizon, he’s facing another uphill battle to get back into fighting shape—whether he likes it or not.
