Jacob Elordi, known for The Kissing Booth, and Lily-Rose Depp are teaming up for a new movie based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel Outer Dark, written way back in 1948. The film is set to start shooting in 2026 and will mark the English-language debut of acclaimed director Laszlo Nemes, who has already won an Oscar.

The story centers around a young woman during the Great Depression who has her brother’s baby. After the baby is born, the brother abandons the child in the woods, pretending it died naturally. When the woman finds out the truth, she sets off on a desperate journey to find her baby. Meanwhile, the siblings go their separate ways through the countryside, but they’re being hunted by three dangerous men with dark intentions.

At the Cannes Film Festival, Nemes shared his excitement, saying that ever since he first read Outer Dark, he dreamed of turning it into a movie that truly captures McCarthy’s deep and haunting storytelling. He praised Elordi and Depp as “magnetic actors” and feels confident that together they can bring this powerful story to life.

He described the film as an intense and poetic journey—a kind of road trip that explores life, death, and the complexities of the human soul. Nemes wants to create a unique cinematic world that feels both beautiful and terrifying.

Nemes is also finishing his third film, Orphan, which will premiere soon at the festival. Meanwhile, McCarthy’s past adaptations like No Country for Old Men and The Road have been huge hits with critics and audiences alike, so expectations are high for Outer Dark.
