The realm of Hollywood often witnesses on-set romances blooming between actors, creating headline-worthy relationships that captivate audiences. Jacob Elordi and Joey King, co-stars in Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth,” were no exception. Their real-life relationship, emerging from their on-screen chemistry, added an extra layer of intrigue to the movie’s popularity.
“The Kissing Booth” was dubbed as one of the most-watched films globally upon its release, according to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Elordi and King’s off-screen romance further fueled interest in the film, captivating the attention of American teens. However, their relationship took a turn when news of their breakup surfaced, leaving fans stunned.
Following their split, glimpses into their lives via social media hinted at tensions. Elordi’s departure from social media in November 2018 coincided with King’s tweet that subtly hinted at her distress. Their public personas seemed to diverge, especially as Elordi delved into more intense projects, distancing himself from the teen-oriented image associated with “The Kissing Booth.”
Elordi’s candid remarks about the franchise being “ridiculous” and not aligning with his preferences in a 2023 GQ interview sparked a back-and-forth between the actors. King, in response, defended her enjoyable experience while filming the movies, asserting that she cherished the moments despite Elordi’s perspective. Their disagreements spilled onto social media, with King previously calling Elordi out on Twitter for allegedly lying about not watching the sequel.
However, during an appearance on “The Howard Stern Show,” King clarified the situation, explaining that her deleted tweet wasn’t due to animosity but rather an acknowledgment of using inappropriate language. She highlighted the term “capping” as inappropriate and apologized for its use, revealing that Elordi was aware of the tweet and had given her permission to post it.
The aftermath of their split was evident on social media, as King removed all traces of her relationship with Elordi from her Instagram, while Elordi deactivated his entire account, signaling a possible strain in their post-breakup relationship.
Elordi openly discussed the challenges of fame and media attention during his relationship with King, expressing how the intense public scrutiny almost led him to contemplate quitting acting due to feeling like a public commodity.
Despite their current separate paths, both actors seem to have moved forward, albeit maintaining a somewhat strained relationship. There have been moments of apparent discord, juxtaposed with instances where Elordi acknowledged and celebrated the collective experience of working with his co-stars, including King, post-filming “The Kissing Booth.” The complexity of their post-relationship dynamics continues to be a point of intrigue among fans and media observers alike.
