Is Yanks’ Torres named ‘great fit’ for NL team?

As the New York Yankees push for the playoffs, there’s uncertainty surrounding the future of second baseman Gleyber Torres, who is set to enter free agency for the first time in his career.

Torres has had a turbulent season. He faced several benchings early on but has been a standout player as the team’s leadoff batter in recent weeks. Despite this, the Yankees may face tough decisions this offseason. With plans to potentially offer a historic contract to Juan Soto, there might not be enough resources left to also re-sign Torres.

Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report predicts that Torres could sign with the San Francisco Giants in free agency, suggesting that the Giants would be a good fit for him. Reuter notes that the Giants have struggled to land top free agents recently, but Torres could be a strong addition if the Yankees decide to let him go.

If Torres does leave, the Yankees have a backup plan. They might move current third baseman Jazz Chisholm to second base, where he is more naturally suited.

Despite his ups and downs this season, Torres has shown significant improvement since being moved back to the leadoff spot on August 16. In the 19 games since then, he’s batting .309 with two home runs, nine RBIs, 15 runs scored, and an .851 OPS. While his defensive struggles continue, many teams are willing to overlook poor defense if the offensive production is strong.

The offseason will be crucial for Torres, as there’s a good chance he might not return to the Yankees.
