Over 20 years after Tobey Maguire first became Spider-Man, fans might get to see him return as Peter Parker once again. Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin, known for co-writing The Batman: Part II, has hinted that he’s interested in writing Spider-Man 4, this time focusing on an older, more mature version of the superhero.
In a recent interaction on X (formerly Twitter), Tomlin responded to a fan asking what kind of Spider-Man movie he’d like to make. He said his main interest right now would be writing a story where Tobey’s Spider-Man is a husband and a father trying to balance family life with being a hero. Tomlin explained that after eight Spider-Man films across different timelines, he feels drawn to the idea of exploring a version of Peter Parker who has grown up and is facing new kinds of responsibilities.
The post quickly spread across social media, sparking massive excitement among fans who have been hoping for a continuation of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Maguire’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) already reignited nostalgia, and many now believe a standalone film showing an older Peter could be the perfect way to revisit his story.
When asked recently if there was any progress on such a project, Tomlin kept things vague but positive. He said there was “nothing to announce” yet because many people and studios would need to be involved, but he hasn’t received a “no” either. His teasing comment, “slow and steady wins the race,” has only fueled fan theories that something might be brewing behind the scenes.
So far, neither Tobey Maguire nor any studio has confirmed the project, but the idea of Spider-Man juggling hero work with fatherhood has struck a chord with longtime fans.
Meanwhile, Tom Holland is set to return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, releasing on July 31, 2026, alongside Zendaya. Holland has described it as a “fresh start” for his version of Peter Parker after the events of No Way Home.
As for Tomlin, he’s busy working on The Batman: Part II, which will hit theaters in October 2027. Still, his comments about Tobey’s Spider-Man have given fans something big to hope for — a heartfelt, mature return of the hero who first swung his way into movie history.
