The idea of a live-action Naruto movie has been circulating for eight years now, with initial reports dating back to July 2015 when Variety announced Lionsgate’s involvement and the attachment of director Michael Gracey. However, updates on the project had been scarce until Feb. 23, 2023, when a significant development reignited fans’ hopes.

Following the success of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece, there was a resurgence of optimism among fans about the possibility of a Naruto movie finally coming to fruition on the big screen.

The emergence of screenwriter Tasha Huo, listed among “10 Screenwriters to Watch for 2023” by Variety on Nov. 22, 2023, fueled speculation about active development of the Naruto live-action adaptation. Huo’s background as a fantasy enthusiast, evidenced by her involvement in projects like Critical Role’s Mighty Nein series, resonated with fans who emphasized the importance of having professionals passionate about the source material working on the adaptation.

While many fans expressed excitement at the prospect of a Naruto live-action movie, some harbored doubts, citing concerns about the involvement and dedication of series creator Masashi Kishimoto compared to Eiichiro Oda’s commitment to Netflix’s One Piece adaptation.

However, recent confirmation from The Hollywood Reporter has laid to rest any lingering doubts. The Naruto movie is indeed happening, with director Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm, known for his work on the 2021 Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Kishimoto’s endorsement of Cretton as the perfect director for Naruto further solidified fans’ confidence in the project.

Kishimoto’s statement expressing faith in Cretton’s ability to bring Naruto to life as a solid drama about people, along with his willingness to collaborate in the production process, has reassured fans who were initially hesitant about the adaptation.

For those still uncertain about a live-action Naruto movie, the only recourse is to await the collective effort and creative vision of the team involved to either dispel their concerns or potentially change their minds.
