The Starbucks watermelon mug has a complicated history, and there are uncertainties about its future release. The official Starbucks website has pages dedicated to the watermelon mug, available in 12oz and a 24oz plastic cold cup. However, both are currently unavailable for purchase.
The watermelon mug features a cute design with a picture of a watermelon slice – the bottom half is green, the top half is red with black seeds, separated by a white line. It was initially released in the UK as part of a Summer collection about eight months ago. While it was available for purchase, it has since become a sought-after item, with secondhand sellers offering it on platforms like Amazon and eBay.
The controversy surrounding the watermelon mug is related to the current boycott of Starbucks due to the company’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict. The watermelon’s symbolism, dating back to 1967, aligns with Palestinian solidarity, as the colors used in the mug design mirror those on the Palestinian flag. Social media confusion has led some to mistakenly assume that Starbucks is attempting to show support for Palestine with the mug.
However, a Starbucks spokesperson clarified that the watermelon mug is from the previous summer and not a new release. Despite online speculation, Starbucks has not changed its stance on the conflict. Due to the controversy and backlash, it’s unlikely that Starbucks will re-release the watermelon mug anytime soon. The items are currently unavailable on the Starbucks website, and it seems the company is not actively promoting or restocking them. The future of the watermelon mug remains uncertain in light of the recent events and boycotts.
