Karlie Kloss and Joshua Kushner, the power couple known for their entrepreneurial ventures and philanthropic endeavors, are breathing new life into a legendary publication as they announce the revival of LIFE Magazine, more than two decades after its regular publication ceased.
Their media company, Bedford Media, has struck a deal with Dotdash Meredith to relaunch LIFE Magazine in both print and digital formats, aiming to restore its status as a vibrant media property. The move marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the iconic photo magazine, which has a rich history dating back over a century.
The agreement comes on the heels of Bedford Media’s acquisition of i-D Magazine from Vice Media Group, signaling the company’s expansion into the realm of fashion and culture. Joshua Kushner, a prominent investor and founder of venture-capital firm Thrive Capital, brings his expertise to the table as he takes on the role of publisher for LIFE Magazine.
Under the terms of the deal, Bedford Media will oversee the full operations of the revived LIFE Magazine, including editorial direction, revenue generation, and media initiatives. Meanwhile, Dotdash Meredith retains ownership of the extensive LIFE photography and content archives spanning decades, ensuring the preservation of its rich heritage.
Karlie Kloss, CEO of Bedford Media, expressed her excitement about the relaunch, emphasizing LIFE’s potential to serve as “an uplifting and unifying voice” amidst today’s chaotic media landscape. She cited the magazine’s iconic legacy and its ability to resonate with diverse audiences through universal narratives of humanity.
Joshua Kushner echoed these sentiments, highlighting LIFE’s unique ability to blend culture, current events, and everyday life. He emphasized the magazine’s role in spotlighting the triumphs, challenges, and diverse perspectives that define our collective human experience.
Founded in 1883, LIFE Magazine enjoyed widespread popularity as a weekly publication until its original owner, Time Inc., ceased regular publication in 1972. Despite subsequent revivals, the magazine suspended regular circulation in 2000. Now, with the visionary leadership of Karlie Kloss and Joshua Kushner, LIFE Magazine is poised to reclaim its position as a cultural touchstone in the media landscape.
Describing itself as a media holding company focused on “artisanal storytelling, authenticity, and shared cultural resonance,” Bedford Media aims to blend iconic brands with innovative approaches to reaching audiences. With a commitment to quality and depth, the company’s strategy reflects a departure from ubiquity in favor of meaningful engagement with its audience.
