Just weeks after Superman soared into theaters and won over both fans and critics, director James Gunn has confirmed that he is already working on the script for a follow-up. The filmmaker, who also serves as co-head of DC Studios, took to Threads to share the update, writing: “Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!!”
To clear up speculation, Gunn also noted that while the project continues Superman’s story, it should not be referred to as Superman 2. “This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It’s not Superman 2,” he clarified.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn elaborated on the project’s direction. He explained that while the new movie is indeed a continuation, it may not fit the mold of a conventional sequel. “What I’m working on is in some way… I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily,” Gunn teased.
With the film still in early development, no plot details or additional cast announcements have been revealed. For now, fans will have to wait as the DC boss shapes the future of the Man of Steel on screen.
Gunn’s decision to move forward with another Superman-centered story comes as little surprise, given the success of the most recent film. As of July 31, the movie had crossed the $300 million mark at the global box office, cementing its status as a major win for the DC slate.
Starring David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, the movie delivered both action and emotional depth. The official synopsis read: “When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good. Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman’s four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it’s too late?”
With fans still celebrating Superman’s big-screen triumph, Gunn’s latest update offers a promising glimpse into where DC’s cinematic universe is headed next.
