Diablo Cody, the renowned screenwriter behind hits like “Juno” and “Jennifer’s Body,” is set to produce an adaptation of the popular Webtoon comic “Death of a Pop Star,” created by Violet Karim.
According to Variety, Cody’s production company has enlisted Isa Mazzei, known for her work on films like “CAM” and “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” to write the script for the upcoming movie.
“Death of a Pop Star” follows the supernatural journey of Sophie, a celebrated pop star who, after a mysterious fall down a flight of stairs, finds herself waking up in Hell. However, Sophie’s misfortune takes an unexpected turn when the Grim Reaper, her number one fan, intervenes and offers her a second chance at life on Earth. But with this resurrection comes a dangerous threat, as Sophie becomes the target of forces determined to drag her back to Hell.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the project, Cody stated, “As a huge fan of both pop music and the undead, I am so excited to help bring this offbeat story to the screen.”
In addition to Cody’s involvement, Mason Novick joins as a producer on the film. Wattpad Webtoon Studios executives Aron Levitz, David Madden, and Jason Goldberg are serving as executive producers.
Levitz expressed confidence in the adaptation, stating, “Death of a Pop Star is one of those titles that just lends itself so perfectly to a live-action adaptation.” He praised Violet Karim for creating a captivating story, and emphasized Cody’s expertise in bridging the gap between the living and the dead.
