Is Darkwing Duck reboot happening?

Back in the 1990s, Disney was truly in its golden era of TV cartoons. They had a special afternoon block called The Disney Afternoon, and wow, it was packed with absolute gems like DuckTales, TaleSpin, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, and Darkwing Duck. These shows weren’t just cartoons, they were a full-blown childhood experience. Kids couldn’t get enough of them. There were video games, comic books, toys, you name it. They were all connected in little ways and made for the kind of cosy, feel-good entertainment that stuck with people for years.

Now fast forward to today, streaming platforms are full of nostalgic content because, let’s be real, people love to relive the magic they grew up with. Disney noticed that fans still hold a special place in their hearts for these shows, so they’ve slowly started bringing some of them back to life with fresh reboots and updated versions.

The first one to make a comeback in recent years was DuckTales. Disney rebooted it with a whole new vibe and ran it for three seasons from 2017 to 2021 on Disney+. And it did really well! So now, they’re giving Darkwing Duck, a fan favourite, its well-deserved moment again. A brand-new version of it is being made for Disney+ too.

If you don’t remember, Darkwing Duck originally aired from 1991 to 1992. It followed a quirky superhero named Drake Mallard (that’s Darkwing’s real name) who fought crime in the city of St. Canard. He wasn’t alone; his loyal sidekick, Launchpad McQuack (who fans might remember from DuckTales), was always by his side. At home, Drake was also a loving dad to his adopted daughter, Gosalyn. The show had a mix of action, humour, and heart. It was about saving the day, but also being a good parent and a hero with values.

There was buzz about the reboot as far back as November 2020, but for a long time, things were quiet. Then, finally, in March 2024, Disney gave an update confirming that the project is still alive and moving forward. So fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief and get excited again. While there’s still a bit of mystery around the full cast and release date, a few hints have started to come out about who’s working behind the scenes, and yes, it’s definitely happening.

Do we have any Darkwing Duck reboot update?

After the initial buzz around the Darkwing Duck reboot, things got pretty quiet for a few years, almost like the project had vanished into thin air. But then, in March 2024, a small but hopeful update popped up. According to The Disinsider, while TaleSpin isn’t being worked on at all right now (which is a bit sad for its fans), the Darkwing Duck reboot is still in development. One insider even said that it’s “very much still in the works,” though they weren’t sure when we’d actually get to see it. So, not a ton of details, but enough to keep the hope alive.

Later in 2024, more whispers started making their way online. At LA Con, Jim Cummings, the legendary voice actor who originally brought Darkwing Duck to life, apparently told a fan that yes, the reboot is still happening, and yes, he’ll be returning to voice the character again. That was a big sigh of relief for longtime fans who couldn’t imagine anyone else as Darkwing.

The reboot is being produced by Seth Rogen and his creative partner Evan Goldberg through their production company, Point Grey Pictures. While we still don’t know who’s writing the show or who else will be in the cast, it’s exciting to see big names behind the scenes.

Now, there was a bit of a hiccup, too. Tad Stones, the original creator of Darkwing Duck, revealed during a Reddit AMA in 2024 that the reboot had made it to the writer’s room stage, which is where scripts and storylines get developed, but that specific team ended up getting disbanded. A little setback, yes, but thankfully not the end of the road.

Tad also confirmed that Point Grey Pictures is still actively working on the reboot, which is a strong sign that the show isn’t cancelled or forgotten. It’s just taking time, because animation, especially quality work, is a long process. But once it’s ready and finally lands on Disney+, both longtime fans and a whole new generation will be ready to shout that classic catchphrase:

“Let’s get dangerous!”
