As per Deadline’s report, Cillian Murphy is set to headline Universal’s upcoming film adaptation of Mark A. Bradley’s book, “Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America.” Known for his exceptional talent, Murphy’s involvement in this project seems tailor-made, with the filmmakers envisioning him not only as the lead actor but also as a producer.
“Blood Runs Coal” delves deep into the gritty world of Pennsylvania coal miners during the tumultuous 1960s, shedding light on one of America’s darkest union crimes. At its core is the story of Jock Yablonski, a prominent figure in the United Mine Workers, who fights relentlessly to improve the lives of his fellow miners. However, the narrative takes a sinister turn when a dubious union election ensues, leading to accusations of fraud against his rival. Tragically, Jock and most of his family fall victim to violence, leaving his son Chip, portrayed by Murphy, determined to seek justice and redeem their tarnished legacy.
Universal’s acquisition of the rights to “Blood Runs Coal” came just days before Murphy’s Oscar win, solidifying their commitment to the project.
