Is ChatGPT down today? Here’s what you need to know

Is it getting hard for you to use ChatGPT too?

It’s been a tough day for ChatGPT users everywhere! Today, June 10, ChatGPT stopped working unexpectedly. This means both the app on your phone or computer and the way other programs connect to ChatGPT are broken.

People started noticing problems around 2:45 AM ET (that’s 11:45 PM PT or 7:45 AM BST). At first, a few reports came in, then more and more people in places like the U.K. and Europe started having issues. As people in North America and Australia woke up and tried to use ChatGPT, more problems emerged.

It’s not just the regular ChatGPT that’s broken; OpenAI’s image maker called Sora is also having trouble. Some people can still use it, but many others are seeing error messages or can’t get it to load at all.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it. This outage has already lasted for more than five hours. While the number of people reporting problems has gone down a little bit (from 1,963 to 1,789), it’s still a big issue for many users around the world. We’ll have to wait and see if things get better or if this is just a temporary dip in the problems.

What did OpenAI say about ChatGPT being down today?

ChatGPT has been down for a while now! The problems started around 2:36 AM ET (that’s New York time). It’s been about seven hours since then, and it’s still not working right for many people.

OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, has said they know what’s causing the problem and are working on fixing it. But even with their efforts, people are still reporting issues, and ChatGPT is still not fully functional.

Everyone who uses ChatGPT for work, school, or just for fun is hoping it gets fixed very soon so they can get back to using their favorite AI tool!

OpenAI put out another update on their status page, but honestly, it’s not saying anything new. It’s the same message they’ve been giving us for a while now.

Their report, posted at 9:43 a.m., says:

“We have identified the root cause for the issue causing elevated errors and latency across the listed services. We are working on implementing a mitigation.”

This means they know why ChatGPT and other services are having problems, like showing errors and being slow. They’re also working on a fix. But that’s all we know right now. We’re still waiting for them to actually implement that fix and get things back to normal.

Which ChatGPT models are most affected?

Today’s problem with ChatGPT is affecting different people in different ways. How it’s impacting you might depend on which version, or “model,” of ChatGPT you’re trying to use.

From what we’re hearing, the ChatGPT o3 version seems to be having trouble. But good news for users of 4o-mini and 4o-mini high – those versions appear to be working fine!

If you’re wondering which ChatGPT model you should usually use, here’s a what you should know:

  • For your everyday needs: Start with GPT-4o. It’s great for most common things you’d want to do and can handle text, pictures, and even voice.
  • For talking about sensitive stuff: If you need the AI to understand feelings and be really careful with its words, use GPT-4.5.
  • For really tough thinking and deep dives: When you need a super thorough answer and accuracy is more important than how fast it responds, go for o1 or o3.
  • For quick smart answers, especially for techy things: If you need quick help with math, computer coding, or looking at data, pick o4 mini. It’s fast and smart for those kinds of questions.
