Apple is rumored to be gearing up for the launch of new iPads in May, introducing OLED panels and debuting a fresh iPad Air model.

According to insights shared by Mark Gurman, a reputable Apple tipster and Bloomberg reporter, sources familiar with Apple’s plans have indicated an “early May” timeframe for the release of the next-generation iPads. Initially anticipated for March or April, the launch was reportedly delayed due to challenges in OLED display manufacturing and software readiness for the upcoming tablets.

The upcoming lineup is expected to feature new iPad Pro models, likely to be codenamed J717, J718, J720, and J721, powered by the Apple M3 chip, as seen in the recent 13-inch MacBook Air. Alongside performance upgrades, these iPad Pros are anticipated to come with revamped Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil accessories. Details regarding the specific enhancements to these accessories were not provided in Gurman’s recent report, but possibilities include new keyboard mechanisms, improved flexibility in positioning, and enhanced sensitivity and precision for the Apple Pencil.

For the iPad Air series, enhancements are expected to focus on chip upgrades, possibly opting for the M3 chip, a significant improvement over the current M1 chip found in the current iPad Air. Additionally, speculation suggests that a larger display for the iPad Air could be in the works, potentially nearing 13 inches. This move aims to inject new life into the iPad lineup, particularly in a landscape where smartphones are growing larger, and foldable devices are gaining traction.

Should Apple proceed with the anticipated May launch, it would coincide closely with WWDC 2024, scheduled for June 10 this year. This proximity suggests that Apple’s upcoming announcements may serve as a prelude to the developer-focused event, hinting at significant updates and innovations in the iPad ecosystem.
