Instagram is set to enhance its direct messaging (DM) experience with a range of new features designed to make conversations more engaging and personalized. Among the notable updates are new photo editing capabilities and custom sticker options, expanding the creative tools available within DMs.
Users can now edit photos directly within DMs, mirroring the editing capabilities found in Instagram Stories. This includes options to draw on photos and add stickers before sending them. Instagram is also rolling out custom stickers, enabling users to design personalized stickers using their photos. These updates are aimed at making the photo-sharing experience in DMs more dynamic and interactive.
Instagram is also rolling out new chat themes, which will alter the appearance of DMs with options like a fall theme or one related to pop star Sabrina Carpenter’s latest album. This feature aims to bring a fresh and customizable look to the messaging interface. Another update allows users to add a birthday cake icon to Notes, a feature similar to an away status message, making it easier to celebrate special occasions in DMs.
The emphasis on enhancing direct messaging is part of Instagram’s broader strategy to boost engagement on the platform. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, stated that direct messaging is pivotal in determining content rankings. In July, Mosseri highlighted that Instagram considers how often a post is shared via DMs when determining its visibility. He encouraged content creators to focus on producing posts that users would want to share with friends, as this can improve reach and engagement over time.
With these new features, Instagram aims to make DMs a more versatile and enjoyable communication tool, reflecting the growing importance of messaging on the platform.
