Barcelona is entering a new chapter under head coach Hansi Flick, and it looks like the fresh start is coming with fresh faces too. One name already making waves is Ibrahim Diarra, an 18-year-old winger from Mali who has reportedly been called up to train with the first team during pre-season, a move that signals major confidence in his potential.
Diarra joined Barcelona last year after catching the eye of scouts during the 2023 U-17 World Cup, where he scored five goals and assisted four more to help Mali secure a third-place finish. His performances were electric, showing off his quick feet, physical strength, and natural goal-scoring instincts. Barcelona moved quickly, paying €1.7 million to sign him from Africa Foot Academy.
Despite all the hype, Diarra’s early days in Spain weren’t smooth. He arrived in November 2024 with minor knee issues and wasn’t fully match-fit. On top of that, he had to deal with all the administrative hurdles that come with international transfers. But Diarra didn’t let any of that slow him down.
Instead, he got to work, and by the end of the season, he was a key figure in Barcelona’s youth team treble, winning the Youth League, Liga, and Copa del Rey. He even delivered a standout performance in the Youth League final, earning Man of the Match honours with 2 goals and an assist. Fans and teammates have even started calling him “Kaká,” a nod to his silky dribbling and attacking style.
Diarra plays mainly as a left-footed right winger, known for cutting inside and beating defenders, but he’s also comfortable in an attacking midfield role. While he’s still officially part of the reserve team, Barcelona sees him as one to watch. They’ve already extended his contract until 2028.
Before the summer break, the club gave Diarra a custom fitness program and a promise: stick to it, and you’ll get your shot with the first team in pre-season. The young winger didn’t take that lightly. He trained hard while in Mali, then continued his prep in Paris, working in the gym and on the pitch. Photos from the summer show a much sharper, fitter version of Diarra, clearly someone focused on the opportunity ahead.
Now, he’s expected to arrive back in Barcelona very soon and could start training with Flick and the senior squad as early as this Sunday or Monday. For a teenager from Mali, this isn’t just another training session, it’s the start of what could be a remarkable journey into the heart of Camp Nou.
