It’s been nearly three decades since Nintendo’s venture into film adaptations with the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie in 1993, a production that received harsh criticism and struggled at the box office. Learning from this experience, Nintendo pursued a different approach, licensing its iconic characters for an animated adventure film in collaboration with Universal Pictures, namely, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Following its successful 2023 theatrical run, fans eager to revisit the Mushroom Kingdom can now enjoy the movie in the comfort of their homes.

The movie premiered in theaters on April 5, 2023, captivating audiences through May and nearing June. To cater to its widespread popularity, Universal announced a Video-On-Demand (VOD) release starting May 15.

Currently, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is available for rental or purchase on various platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, Microsoft, and Google Play. Rental prices are around $5.99, while purchasing the film generally costs $9.99. Initially, renting or buying were the sole options, but now, the movie is officially accessible for streaming on Netflix.

Why was there a delay in The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s streaming release?

The delay in the streaming release disappointed many fervent fans, who eagerly anticipated the movie’s availability on streaming platforms.

In usual circumstances, films make their streaming debut around 45 days post-theatrical release, a standard timeframe observed particularly during the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, The Super Mario Bros. Movie didn’t adhere to this pattern.

Disney established the 45-day streaming window with movies like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a timeline followed by most studios. Yet, Disney also introduced extensions to this window with Marvel’s Phase Four MCU films, taking between 70 to 89 days before premiering on Disney Plus. This evolution signifies that the timeframes for streaming releases are no longer as straightforward as they once were.
