Viewing a solar eclipse can be an exciting and memorable experience, but it’s essential to protect your eyes to avoid damage. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own DIY eclipse-viewing goggles:
- Start with cardboard: Use a shoebox or any other cardboard box you have lying around the house.
- Cut a hole: Cut a one-inch square hole in the lower right-hand corner of the shoebox or one of its ends.
- Apply tin foil: Tape a small square of tin foil over the outside of the hole, ensuring that it covers all areas and is securely taped. Use a pin or pencil to poke a hole in the middle of the tin foil.
- Cut a second hole: On the corner across from the tin foiled hole, cut another square hole of the same size. This hole will remain uncovered.
- Add a piece of paper: Cut out a rectangle of white printer paper inside the box, directly across from the tin foiled hole. Leave a small sliver of uncovered cardboard across from the non-covered hole.
- Close the lid and view: When it’s time for the eclipse, put the lid on the shoebox and look through the open hole with the eclipse behind you. The tiny pinhole in the aluminum foil will filter the eclipse and project it onto the piece of paper inside the box.
Remember, never look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse without proper eye protection. Use specialty eclipse glasses or DIY eclipse-viewing goggles to safeguard your eyes and enjoy the celestial event safely. Happy viewing!
