The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has had its share of controversial moments throughout the 95-year history of the Oscars. These incidents include actress Sacheen Littlefeather’s refusal to accept Marlon Brando’s award in protest of Hollywood’s treatment of Native Americans in 1973, photographer Robert Opel streaking nude across the stage in 1974, and the infamous mix-up in 2017 when La La Land was mistakenly awarded Best Picture instead of Moonlight.
However, perhaps the most shocking display of controversy occurred in 2022 when renowned performer Will Smith shocked the world by rising from his seat, walking onto the Oscars stage, and slapping host Chris Rock across the face on live television. This moment reverberated throughout Hollywood and beyond, leaving a lasting impact on both Smith and Rock.
Smith’s actions were met with condemnation from many, showcasing pure rage and violence in front of millions of viewers. Yet, the incident quickly spread across the globe, becoming a meme within days. Consequently, its lasting impression on Hollywood is multifaceted, viewed differently depending on one’s perspective.
In response to the incident, the Academy issued a 10-year ban on Smith’s attendance at any Academy events or programs, including the Oscars, until 2033. Despite public apologies from Smith to both the Academy and Chris Rock, as well as his subsequent resignation from the Academy, the incident sparked ongoing debate over whether Smith deserves forgiveness.
Nearly a year later, Rock addressed the ordeal for the first time in his Netflix special Selective Outrage, offering his perspective on the incident and criticizing both Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. While some saw this as an opportunity for Rock to share his side of the story, others found the taste just as bitter as the events of that fateful night in 2022.
