Fans tuning into the latest season of Selling Sunset on Netflix might have noticed a major change: Heather Rae El Moussa is no longer part of the show.
Selling Sunset offers a glamorous peek into the fast-paced and competitive world of Los Angeles real estate. The reality series follows a group of high-end realtors from The Oppenheim Group, showcasing their luxury properties and the drama that unfolds in their professional and personal lives.
Why Did Heather Leave Selling Sunset After Season 7?
Heather Rae El Moussa, a key figure on Selling Sunset since its debut in 2019, is noticeably absent from the show’s latest season, Season 8, which premiered on September 6.
During an appearance on The Skinny Confidential podcast, Heather explained her departure, revealing that the demands of Selling Sunset were overwhelming her. She described how the show’s unpredictable filming schedule was impacting her primary career as a real estate agent, saying it “took over” her life and made it challenging to balance her professional responsibilities:
“With ‘Selling Sunset’, I never knew when I was going to be filming. It was last minute, it took over my life, it was hard to do my real job — real estate. It was hard to do anything else.”
Heather also disclosed that she wasn’t invited back for Season 8 and that the stress of juggling the show and her career had often left her in tears. She had a more limited presence in Season 7, appearing sporadically while on maternity leave.
Heather’s current focus is on her new HGTV series, The Flipping El Moussas, which she co-produces with her husband, Tarek El Moussa. This show shifts the spotlight to home renovation and flipping, contrasting with the high-stakes real estate drama of Selling Sunset. Heather mentioned that working on her own show has been “so much happier” for her, thanks to the flexibility in scheduling and her involvement in production decisions:
“It was a blessing that I wasn’t asked to come back because I’m so much happier filming my show with Tarek. We’re co-producers on our show so we pick the hours.”
With their young son, Tristan, born in early 2022, Heather and Tarek are finding that their new show offers a more manageable work-life balance, allowing them to better meet their parenting responsibilities.
Selling Sunset remains available for streaming on Netflix, while The Flipping El Moussas was renewed for a second season in 2023, though it has not yet aired.
