Mark Wahlberg’s performance in “The Departed” garnered critical acclaim and even earned him an Oscar nomination, but behind the scenes, it wasn’t all smooth sailing, especially in his interactions with director Martin Scorsese. Despite the success of the film, Wahlberg has hinted at some behind-the-scenes drama, particularly revolving around his hair extensions.

Initially, Wahlberg was considered for a different role in the film. During a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he revealed that negotiations were centered around his compensation and the character he would portray, ultimately leading to his decision to play Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam. Wahlberg believed that this role would complement the other actors and contribute to the overall dynamic of the film.

In “The Departed,” Wahlberg, a Boston native, portrayed Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam, whose role revolved around assisting Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Billy Costigan Jr., in his undercover work within the criminal underworld.

After completing filming for “The Departed,” Wahlberg’s schedule was filled with other projects, including the biopic “Invincible,” where he portrayed Philadelphia Eagles football star Vince Papale. Wahlberg had grown out his hair for this role, initially expecting a short duration on the set of “The Departed.” However, when filming extended unexpectedly to four months, Wahlberg refused to cut his hair, much to Scorsese’s dismay. Wahlberg boldly stood his ground, expressing his refusal with a candid, “I don’t give a f–k.” Eventually, Wahlberg and Scorsese resolved their differences amicably.

Reflecting on the experience, Wahlberg understood Scorsese’s challenges in managing actors like Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, and Leonardo DiCaprio, along with studio demands and other cast members.

Despite the challenges, Wahlberg cherishes his decision to be part of a film that became pivotal in his career. He appreciated the value of the role when he first read the script, allowing him to fully immerse himself in the character and relish the experience.

In another interview with GQ in 2019, Wahlberg admitted that he initially turned down “The Departed.” His agent conveyed his lack of interest to Scorsese. However, Scorsese persisted, expressing his eagerness to collaborate. Ultimately, Scorsese’s enthusiasm and willingness to grant Wahlberg creative control over his character convinced him to accept the role.
