HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has made a major casting announcement, confirming the actors for six iconic characters. The highly anticipated adaptation will bring familiar faces to the screen with fresh talent taking on legendary roles.

  1. Professor Albus Dumbledore: John Lithgow has been confirmed to portray the legendary wizard and Hogwarts headmaster. Lithgow teased that he would explore the complex layers of Dumbledore, a character who becomes increasingly intricate as the series progresses. Previously played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the films, Lithgow promises a new take on this beloved figure.
  2. Professor Severus Snape: Paapa Essiedu, known for his performance in I May Destroy You, will take on the role of the enigmatic and often misunderstood Snape, originally portrayed by Alan Rickman in the films.
  3. Professor Minerva McGonagall: Janet McTeer will step into the shoes of the stern but caring McGonagall, a role previously portrayed by Maggie Smith. McTeer is well known for her work in Ozark and her Oscar-nominated performances in Tumbleweeds and Albert Nobbs.
  4. Rubeus Hagrid: The beloved gamekeeper of Hogwarts, Hagrid, will be played by Nick Frost, known for his roles in Shaun of the Dead. Frost steps into the role previously portrayed by the late Robbie Coltrane.
  5. Professor Quirinus Quirrell: Luke Thallon, a stage actor, will portray Quirrell, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Thallon’s role will be recurring throughout the series, as Quirrell plays a pivotal role in the early books.
  6. Argus Filch: Paul Whitehouse, of Harry & Paul fame, will play Filch, Hogwarts’ grumpy and somewhat comical caretaker. The role of Filch, a squib with no magical powers, was made famous by David Bradley in the films.

The casting of these characters has fans excited, though there’s still no word on who will play the three main characters—Harry, Ron, and Hermione—who were portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, respectively, in the films. The new actors will undoubtedly have big shoes to fill as they step into these iconic roles.
