Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, who is currently incarcerated following multiple convictions for sexual assault, has been diagnosed with a serious form of bone marrow cancer, according to a report from NBC News on Monday night. The former producer is reportedly receiving treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) while serving his sentence at Rikers Island prison in New York.
Harvey Weinstein battling bone marrow cancer:
Chronic myeloid leukemia, according to the National Cancer Institute, is a disease in which the bone marrow produces an abnormal number of white blood cells. This condition often arises during or after middle age, and though treatments are available, it is a chronic illness that requires ongoing care. Weinstein, 71, is currently undergoing medical treatment within the confines of his prison sentence, which has seen a series of health complications in recent years.
This latest health revelation follows a string of medical emergencies for Weinstein, who has been shuttled between Rikers Island and local hospitals since his incarceration. Last month, he underwent emergency heart surgery, where his representatives stated that he had been “rushed” to Bellevue Hospital for a heart procedure. At the time, the spokesperson cited “several medical conditions” as contributing factors to Weinstein’s deteriorating health.
Weinstein’s health struggles have mounted since the start of his imprisonment. In July, he was also hospitalized for COVID-19 and pneumonia, prompting yet another transfer to Bellevue Hospital. These ongoing medical crises compound the gravity of his legal woes, as Weinstein faces a slew of sexual assault charges in various jurisdictions.
Once a powerful figure in Hollywood, Weinstein’s fall from grace began in 2017 when numerous women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct, sparking the #MeToo movement. He was convicted in 2020 of sexual assault and rape, leading to his prison sentence.
The timing of the cancer diagnosis coincides with additional legal challenges. Last month, a New York grand jury indicted Weinstein on new charges, further intensifying the already extensive legal battles he faces. While his attorneys have argued for leniency based on his declining health, Weinstein’s prognosis remains uncertain as he continues to fight both his illness and mounting charges.
