Halle Berry’s filmography spans a variety of iconic roles, from her appearance in a James Bond movie to her notable roles in the John Wick series, Kingsman, X-Men, and Cloud Atlas. However, one film that stands out, albeit for less positive reasons, is the 2004 Catwoman movie, where she portrayed the famous movie villain.
Despite the widely acknowledged criticism and the film’s reputation as a flop, Berry herself remains unperturbed by the negative reception. In 2018, while accepting the Matrix Award from New York Women in Communications, Berry candidly addressed the decision to take on the role in Catwoman.
She acknowledged the warnings from those around her, with many advising her against the project, predicting that it could be detrimental to her career. Berry, however, chose to follow her intuition and took on the role. Even though Catwoman received significant backlash, including a Razzie award for Berry, she highlighted the positive aspects of the experience.
Berry expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet interesting people she wouldn’t have encountered otherwise and for the chance to learn two forms of martial arts. Furthermore, she humorously emphasized the valuable lessons learned from the film, stating, “I got to learn what not to do!”
In addition to the experiential gains, Berry acknowledged that the movie, despite its failure in the eyes of many, brought financial success, stating that she made “a sh*tload of money that changed my life.” Overall, her perspective on Catwoman seems to focus on the personal and professional growth she derived from the project, turning a critical failure into a learning experience.
