Halle Berry revealed she had to switch her planned gown for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival’s opening night due to the festival’s newly enforced dress code. The actress was set to wear a stunning Gaurav Gupta gown featuring a long train but couldn’t because the new rules ban “excessively voluminous” clothing.
At the Cannes jury press conference, Berry said, “I had an amazing dress by Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train,” adding she wouldn’t break any rules during the gala. She also agreed with the ban on nudity, calling it “probably a good rule.”
What’s New With Cannes Dress Code?
Cannes organizers recently introduced guidelines to align with the festival’s institutional framework and French law. The main focus is prohibiting full nudity on the red carpet. Additionally, any attire that could obstruct movement or complicate seating will be denied entry.
The festival explicitly bans outfits that could pose hazards and enforces a strict no-nudity policy.
The Ongoing ‘No Flats’ Controversy
The festival’s dress code has long faced criticism, especially regarding its unofficial rule that women must wear heels. Several celebrities have made statements by walking barefoot on the red carpet to oppose this:
-
Kristen Stewart (2018)
-
Julia Roberts (2016)
-
Sasha Lane and Cate Blanchett (various years)
-
Jennifer Lawrence wore flip-flops in 2023 at the Anatomy of a Fall premiere
The new regulations mark a continued effort to formalize and tighten dress standards at Cannes.
