“Hacks” is one of the most anticipated comedies available on OTT networks in the world! It features the entertaining, adroit presentation of the comedy industry, as portrayed through the evolution of the mentor-mentee relationship between the legendary Las Vegas standup comedian Deborah Vance and her millennial comedy writer, Ava Daniels.
There is considerable excitement about the upcoming fifth season of “Hacks.” Following the emotional ride of Season 4, this latest installment will have even more biting humour, satire of the industry, the continuing growth of both characters, further generational conflict and much heartfelt chaos.
The series has won multiple Primetime Emmys (including Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Writing & Outstanding Comedy Series), stars Emmy winner Jean Smart & Hannah Einbinder, and all indications are that it is going to have an amazing final season in 2026 on Max! The final fifth season of the highly successful series will conclude the five-season series arc compellingly.
Hacks season 5: Release Date News
In May 2025, before Season Four ended, the series was confirmed as being renewed for a Fifth Season. Production for Season Five took place beginning in September 2025 in New York City and was completed recently (as reported by Hannah Einbinder in her 2025 Emmy interviews).
It is expected that the launch of Season Five will occur during Spring (March – May) 2026 on Max, based on multiple sources, including Paul W. Downs via Instagram, and the first-look images and teaser trailers released thus far. While no exact date has yet been provided for any of Season Five’s episodes, it has been reported that all Season 5 episodes will be available for streaming within weeks of each release, with the first 2–4 week, (depending upon when HBO chooses to release the remaining episodes) of Season Five episodes released on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend 2026.
This season has been widely reported as being “the final season” of the series, as Hannah Einbinder, who plays character Darlene, stated on the Emmys red carpet in late 2025, that it will be bittersweet to finish, and that neither Darlene nor the producers want to “push [the series] past its prime”. While the creators of the series are being somewhat vague regarding the future of the series beyond Season Five, co-creator Casey Bloys has stated “it will end with a very satisfying conclusion“, as sources working with HBO note that the series will finish as planned, but there may be additional projects (such as a movie to follow) – as long as Bloys allows them to produce such projects when they wish.
Hacks season 5: Cast Details
The core cast returns, with Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder leading as Deborah and Ava. Series regulars include:
– Paul W. Downs as Jimmy
– Megan Stalter (promoted in later seasons)
– Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Marcus
– Mark Indelicato
– Rose Abdoo as Josefina
Christopher Briney is a new cast member joining the ensemble, appearing in first-look photographs with Jean Smart, and there are many Season 4 guest stars, good chance that many of the recurring cast members from Season 4 will return (e.g., Tony Goldwyn, Helen Hunt, Dan Bucatinsky, Kaitlin Olson, Jane Adams, Aristotle Athari, Poppy Liu, Lorenza Izzo, Johnny Sibilly, Luenell etc.), and access to additional guests for Season 5 from within the Season 4 list will be made at some point, but they are not enough time frame until as of right now for any of the specific cast members returning to be officially revealed.
Hacks season 5: Plot
There has not been a detailed logline or synopsis posted for season five yet.
In season four, the finale left many unanswered questions. Deborah made a major sacrifice for Ava by leaving her gig at the late-night show. Then we thought that Deborah had died, but in actuality, she was on an adventure in Singapore. Now it seems like season five may bring Deborah back to the USA (most likely Las Vegas) and open the door to limitless possibilities for Deborah, as we know from the filming in New York. Deborah and Ava’s mentor/mentee relationship will continue throughout the season as they both move through the changes going on in the comedy business, gain personal growth experiences, and their partnership evolves. The creators of the show have told us there would be a planned storyline spanning five seasons from the very beginning of the show, and that it would conclude in a satisfactory manner.
So at its core, the show is still a dark comedy/drama about ambition within the world of entertainment, the trials of growing older in the entertainment field, the generational differences between Deborah and Ava, and the grind of stand-up and/or television comedy.
Keep watching the official trailers and waiting for the exact dates of release, and additional information about cast members, plotlines, etc; all of this information will be released by Max as spring 2026 approaches!
